1. Prepare the Hamburger Steaks
- In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs (if using), chopped onion, egg, garlic powder, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined.
- Shape the mixture into 4 oval patties.
2. Cook the Hamburger Steaks
- Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
- Add the hamburger steaks and cook for about 4–5 minutes on each side, until browned and cooked through. Remove the steaks from the skillet and set aside.
3. Make the Onion Gravy
- In the same skillet, add the sliced onion and cook over medium heat until soft and caramelized, about 5–7 minutes.
- Sprinkle the flour over the onions and stir to combine, cooking for another minute.
- Gradually add the beef broth, stirring constantly to prevent lumps.
- Add Worcestershire sauce, and season with salt and pepper. Bring to a simmer and cook until the gravy thickens, about 3–5 minutes. If desired, stir in butter for extra richness.
4. Combine and Serve
- Return the hamburger steaks to the skillet, spooning some of the gravy over them. Simmer for a couple more minutes to heat through.
- Serve hot, drizzled with the onion gravy. This dish pairs well with mashed potatoes or rice.
Enjoy your hearty hamburger steaks with onion gravy!
