- In a small bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and active dry yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until the mixture becomes frothy.
2. Mix the Dough
- In a large mixing bowl, sift the all-purpose flour and salt together. Make a well in the center and pour in the yeast mixture, plain yogurt, milk, melted ghee or butter, and beaten egg if using.
- Using your hands or a wooden spoon, mix the ingredients until a soft dough forms. If the dough is too dry, add a little more warm water. If it’s too sticky, add a little more flour.
3. Knead the Dough
- Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead it for about 5-7 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic. Alternatively, you can use a stand mixer with a dough hook attachment for this step.
4. Let the Dough Ris
- Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl and cover it with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap. Allow it to rise in a warm, draft-free place for about 1-2 hours or until it doubles in size.
5. Preheat the Ove
- Preheat your oven to the highest temperature setting, preferably with a pizza stone or baking sheet inside to heat up.
6. Shape the Naan
- Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into equal-sized balls. Roll each ball into a circle or oval shape, about 1/4 inch thick.
7. Bake the Naan
- Carefully transfer the rolled-out naan dough onto the preheated pizza stone or baking sheet. Bake for 2-3 minutes on one side until it puffs up and develops golden brown spots. Then, flip it over and bake for an additional 1-2 minutes until cooked through.
8. Garnish (Optional
- Brush the baked naan with melted butter or ghee and sprinkle with minced garlic, chopped cilantro, and nigella seeds or sesame seeds for extra flavor.
9. Serve Warm
- Remove the naan from the oven and serve it warm with your favorite curry or dip. Enjoy the irresistible taste of freshly baked Naan Bread!
