Turkish bread, or simit, is a circular bread with sesame seeds on the exterior. It’s a popular street food in Turkey, often enjoyed with tea. The chewy texture and sesame seed flavor make it a delicious and satisfying snack.
Ingredients:
- 1 cup warm water
- 1 teaspoon active dry yeast
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1/4 cup sesame seeds
Instructions:
- Activate the yeast: In a small bowl, combine warm water, yeast, and sugar. Let stand for 5-10 minutes, or until the yeast is foamy.
- Combine dry ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together flour and salt.
- Mix wet and dry ingredients: Pour the activated yeast mixture into the dry ingredients. Stir until a dough forms.
- Knead the dough: Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes, or until smooth and elastic.
- Rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
- Shape the bread: Punch down the dough and divide it into 12 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a long, thin rope.
- Form the rings: Shape each rope into a circle and join the ends.
- Boil the bread: In a large pot of boiling water, cook the bread rings for 1-2 minutes, or until they float to the surface.
- Bake the bread: Drain the bread and place it on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Sprinkle with sesame seeds. Bake in a preheated oven at 400°F (200°C) for 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown.
- Cool and serve: Let the bread cool slightly before serving. Enjoy with tea or your favorite spread.
